DMMIH
« on: 14 March, 2011, 20:23 »
A Laurence Dalton has appeared on a NY census in 1860, as a child in the family of Dmmih Dalton.  It is unclear if this is my Laurence.

Dmmih was a transcription. We have tried to decipher the handwritten version.

Various opinions have resulted, but I cannot ascertain if one of those interpretations reflects an older Gaelic name or just another haphazard guess.

What Celtic name would sound like Dmmih to
someone?

If any readers have knowledge of the native Irish tongue, your opinion may prove most useful.

Might any of the readers of this post wish to attempt their own deciphering of the handwritten version?

Hi Raymond,

I am not a handwriting expert, but I am willing to take a look and try to decipher the name.  My guess is that this a case of a poor transcription of the name given on the census form and/or a really fuzzy image of the page itself.

If you will post the city & county in NY for the 1860 census, and any other info to help identify the family, I will be happy to give it a try.

Hi Raymond,

I looked at the actual census page at ancestry.com.  I think the first name of Laurence's father is Daniel.

Thank you Karen.

I will look at some passenger lists for a Daniel.

I also may see if I can locate any NY NJ records on the children.

Since I am in Genetic family B, I may see if any persons in group B have roots in NY NJ.
