I have the following information about James Joseph Dalton that may be either new information or supports existing information in your data bank. I am not a relative but research former SUnderland footballers and saw your website.
James Joseph Dalton was born in Ireland (between 1865 and 1869) and raised in Clitheroe , Lancashire.
Dalton was signed by Sunderland Football club from a touring Canadian representative team on 26th September 1891. He played 3 Divison 1 League games in 1893/94 season for Sunderland; debut v Blackburn Rovers 21st October 1893, height just 5'11" and weight given as 13 st in 1891. He then left to join Nelson, Lancashire football team, in early August 1894. Before emigrating to USA he played football for Clitheroe Olympic, Clitheroe Town, Low Moor (a Lancashire team). he then played for Pawtucket Free Wanderers from where he was seected to represent a Canadian Touring team (they were short of numbers so recruited from League clubs in and around Rhode Island.
-SIGNED FROM CANADIAN TOURING TEAM AND JOINED SUNDERLAND AT THE END OF THEIR TOUR (IMPRESSED DURING GAME v SUNDERLAND,01/09/1891).
-EMIGRATED FROM ENGLAND TO USA WHILST IN LATE TEENS (LATE 1880S ?)
-WORKED IN PAPER MILL IN FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS WHILST IN USA. LATER PLAYED FOR PAWTUCKET FREE WANDERERS AFTER A SPELL WORKING IN CHICAGO. (ONLY WORKED AS A FINISHER IN THE PAPER MILL FOR 6 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING TO CHICAGO). STAYED IN CHICAGO FOR 2 YEARS BEFORE HE MOVED TO RHODE ISLAND TO PLAY FOOTBALL FOR PAWTUCKET. HE ACCOMPANIED AN AMEICAN INTERNATIONAL TEAM TO CANADA AND SOON AFTERWARDS GOT THE OFFER TO JOIN THE CANADIAN TOURING SIDE TO THE UK.
-WAS A NATURALISED AMERICAN FROM PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
-WAS RELEASED BY NELSON ON 10/09/1894 AFTER BEING WITH THEM FOR ONLY A MONTH.
-WAS A MECHANIC BY TRADE.
-GIVEN AS A PRISONER IN CHEETHAM PRISON, MANCHESTER, IN 1901 CENSUS.
He arrived in England aboard "State of Nevada" which sailed from new York on 6th August 1891 with the Canadian Touring Team. The ship arrived in Glasgow on 17th August 1891. James J. Dalton was given as aged 32 and a mechanic (this is an error in the ship's log as he was given as 22 when he signed for Sunderland in the same year).
A newspaper report in Sunderland in May 1893 gave James Joseph Dalton as having been born in Clitheroe, Lancs.
I would be grateful if anyone could verify this information, identify any family members, and ideally give a date of birth, place of birth, date of death and place of death.
