Welcome to the Forum, Shea!
The Dalton Genealogical Society sponsors a DNA project at Family Tree DNA (our testing service) for the Dalton surname, called the Dalton Int'l DNA project (or DIDP). We currently have 120+ testees in the Project. For a surname project, the person tested needs to be male, and also be a Dalton - someone who can trace Dalton as the direct line of ancestry. So the test would need to be done by a male relative with the Dalton surname -- a brother, father, uncle, etc. Once you identify a male relative, and they are tested, the test results can be compared with other members of the project.
You can find more info on testing at the Family Tree DNA web site -
