I am posting this request for information on behalf of a DGS member in Maine -

"Looking for any information on great great grandfather William Dalton.  William was born in England about 1820, but I don't know where or the names of his parents.

He emigrated to St. John's Newfoundland where he married Susanna Biddiscombe on 19 Jun 1847 at St. Thomas Anglican Church in St. John's.  Susanna was born 15 Sept 1829 and died 20 Apr 1907.  William died 11 Nov 1877 in St. John's.

Their first born, William was born 6 Jan 1848, and was my great-grandfather.  He married Deborah Ryan from Pouch Cove, Newfoundland on 3 May 1871.  They moved to Lynn, Mass.

William and Susanna had a total of 9 children:
Catherine Theresa was their second child, born 8 Aug 1850.  She married Thomas Ryan of Pouch Cove on 19 Oct 1872.  He was the brother of Deborah Ryan who married William.

William and Susanna's other children were:
Elizabeth b. 2 Feb 1853
Susanna b. 18 Mar 1855
William John b. 31 Dec 1856
Harriet b. 3 Apr 1860
Samuel b. 26 Feb 1863
Charlotte b. 6 Mar 1866
Annie Elizabeth b. 18 Mar 1869

I don't have any additional information on the other children.  I know is a long shot but worth a try.  My brother was tested in the Dalton DNA project, but so far has remained a singleton.

If anyone has any info to offer please reply to the Forum.  Many thanks."

Ancestors in the UK / Re: Frederick Dalton Esq. b. Edinburgh 1815/20?

Hello again Howard,

I sent a note to my brother Brendan (Dalton), who is also researching our Dalton family, asking if he had any suggestions or clues that you may find useful in any search you may undertake at the Edinburgh records office.

Here is Brendan’s reply, with some of my explanations in quotes:

Re: Howard Daltons offer of assistance.

Thanks Peter,

Sounds like a really great opportunity.

Some suggestions:

•   I have seen reference to gentlemanly Dalton’s being granted hunting licences around Edinburgh in the early 19th century;
•   they may be associated with a property called Logan Lee;
•   may also be a reference to an Edinburgh Dalton as an officer in the Dragoons;
•   I’ve also come across an entertaining  letter to an Edinburgh paper from a [George] Dalton who inherited a Scottish property in the late 18th Century - complaining about his neighbours getting him drunk all the time.

These are the only references to a Dalton family around Edinburgh that might possible include a potential Colonel Dalton. Trouble is I found them once and haven't been able to find them again.

For Frederick himself around Edinburgh:

•   any references to potential gentlemanly Dalton families - references to Dalton military officers
•   any lists of Dalton students at grammar schools - schools in general - between 1825 and 1835
•   Edinburgh became a centre for the study of geology around 1835 - any references to Fred studying Geology
•   he seems to be associated with the church of Scotland in Sydney so are there any church immigration schemes in the early 1850’s from Edinburgh
•   or any church records of parishioners
•   was he married prior to coming to Australia - a first wife could have died before he came to here
•   any reference to the Hindmarsh family, eg; he may have emigrated with them and then bought his property with them near Grafton NSW
•   was he a journalist in Edinburgh (not sure what Howard can do about this). “before Frederick entered the NSW colonial government service in 1860 he worked as the Mining Correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) which was owned by Mr. John Fairfax”
•   did he come to Australia to work for (John) Fairfax? if so did Fairfax write to the geological survey to get them to send someone with geological knowledge?
•   any military records about Daltons living around or stationed around Edinburgh.

So these are all the ideas that I have. Its a great opportunity and I wish Howard lots of luck.

I think Fred's full name may have been Frederick William Dalton. There are also a couple of references on Trove (National Library of Australia),  from late in his time, to Warden W Dalton from Forbes and Parkes. I don't think there were two warden Dalton’s in the same region at the same time, but maybe he was really William Frederick Dalton.

All the best

Brendan

Hello Howard,

I have just read your reply on the Dalton Forum to my request for information
on my ancestor Frederick Dalton.

Something that I hadn't mentioned in my request on the Dalton Forum is that
Frederick was regarded as a "practical geologist" by many of the people he worked
with on the NSW frontier, many of whom were (gold) miners during the many
gold rushes in and around NSW in the latter half of the 19th century. There
are numerous accounts of Frederick forwarding mineral finds and fossils to
the Museum of Australia (natural history museum) in Sydney during his career.
So it seems that somewhere Frederick acquired a knowledge of geology.

If you find any information in the Edinburgh records office about Frederick
and/or his family I would be most grateful.

Best regards,

Peter (Pierre) Dalton

Margaret Dalton (mother)

Ancestors in the US / Green Lake County Wisconsin Daltons
« Last post by rrosengren on 13 July, 2013, 11:10 »
I just joined, because I am married to one of the many descendants of John Dalton b. 1817 in Belfast & Jeanette Blackwood. My husband is a Doyle & his grandmother was a Dalton.  The town of Dalton in Green Lake County, Wisconsin was named for the Dalton family (John & Jeanette Dalton) who established their farm in Green Lake County in 1851. I have photos of John & Jeanette & all of their children who lived to adulthood. I would be happy to share info with anyone who is also researching this Dalton line. I also have a correction to share for the John Dalton bio excerpted from Portrait and Biographical Album of Green Lake, Marquette and Waushara Counties of Wisconsin, published by Acme Publishing, 1890 – (Google books) John & Jeanette Dalton had 14 children & their first born child, Elizabeth died in 1924, rather than 1854.  I noticed this error in the publication when I came upon it & wanted to share this correction.
Thanks for the opportunity to collaborate!

My great-great-grand-mother Sarah Storey was born in 1845 Philadelphia and died 1881.  Her mother was Elizabeth Dalton Storey, and she had two aunts: Jane Dalton Emmerson and Mary Dalton McGourren Keating.

The information I am looking for is:
1.   Birth or baptism records for Mary, Jane and Elizabeth Dalton.
2.   Parents names – also, did they have brothers?
3.   Verification that Mary, Jane and Elizabeth are sisters.  Their ages on records would indicate that Mary was born between 1801 and 1808, Jane about 1812 and Elizabeth in 1818.
4.   Clues from each sister indicate they are from Cumberland County – Bowness?  Carlisle?
5.   Marriage record for Jane Dalton and husband John Emmerson.  (I have looked at BMDs, but not found anything matching.)

The Key facts I have, based on family history and verified source materials, are:

Elizabeth Dalton
•   A christening record for Elizabeth Dalton was found for May 6, 1818, with mother of Elizabeth Dalton, no father listed, in Edenham, Cumberland, England.
•   July 04, 1836 - Joseph Story married Betsy Dalton by banns.  Witnesses William Story Jr., Joseph Dant, A. Robson and Charlotte McNeil [Marriages at St. Mary’s, Carlisle, England]
•   Joseph Storey, 2nd son of William Storey and Ann Nicholson of Carlisle, England, was born Aug 14, 1814 and died Aug 12, 1863.
•   Children born to Joseph Storey and Elizabeth include:  James Dalton Storey (born 1835 Gateshead, England, died unknown Pennsylvania or New Jersey); Isabella Storey (born 1838 England and died 1882 Philadelphia) married James Taylor; Mary Anne Storey (born 1841 England died unknown); Sarah Storey (born 1845 and died May, 1881) married William James Davis, Jr. (My great-great-grandparents); Elizabeth Storey (born 1847 NYC and died 1871).Suzanna Dalton Storey (born 1850 and died 1851).
•   James Dalten, son of Joseph and Betsy Story of Castle Street – painter, baptized at St. Mary’s church, Aug. 14, 1836 [Baptisms at St. Mary’s Church, Cumberland]
•   The English 1841 census lists  Joseph Storey age 25, Elizabeth Storey age 20, James Dalkin Story age 5 and Isabella Storey age 2.  [1841 England Census, Gateshead, Durham, England]
•   The Storey family is listed in the 1850 US Census living in New York City:  Joseph (“Strey”) – age 32, Elizabeth age 30, James age 14, Isabella age 11, Mary A age 8, Sarah age 5, Elizabeth age 2 [1850 US Census, New York Ward 5, NYC]
•   Elizabeth Dalton Storey, wife of Joseph, died July 5, 1852, of dysentery. [Philadelphia City Death Certificates]

Elizabeth Dalton had two sisters, Jane and Mary, and both of these sisters came to America.

Jane Dalton
•   Jane appears in the 1870 US Census living in Philadelphia, 2410 Factory St. with husband John Emmerson.  Jane is 48 (putting her birth year as 1822),  John Emmerson is 50. [1870 US Census, Philadelphia Ward 7, District 17]
•   Jane Dalton Emmerson died Philadelphia, 1882.
•   John Emmerson died March 28, 1894.  He was a widower, age 79.    [Philadelphia City Death Certificates].  John Emmerson’s undertaker bill was paid by son Christopher Emmerson.
•   John Emmerson was supposed to be a widower with 1 son when he married Jane Dalton.  Using various clues and source, I have determined that Jane Dalton was John Emmerson’s wife in the 1851 UK Census, Gateshead, Durham, England, with John Emmerson’s 3 children from a prior marriage.
•   Found Christopher, age 10, and John and Jane Emmerson listed in 1851 UK Census, Northumberland, Newcastle-in-Tyne, living in  Old Poor House of St. Andrew’s parish.  John (36) is a house carpenter.  Jane (39) was born in Cumberland, Bowness.  The children were born in Durham Cty, Gateshead.  [Census Returns of England and Wales, 1851, Northumberland, Newcastleon-Tyne]

Mary Dalton
Mary Dalton was Sarah Story Davis’ aunt and had two husbands in Philadelphia:  Ed McGourren (born about 1796 and died Oct 1853), and John Keating (born about 1815 and died March 14, 1863, serving during the Civil War)

•   Mary Dalton (born about 1802 in County Cumberland, England and died Sept. 30, 1880).  She married: #1: Ed McGourren (born about 1796 and died Oct 1853), #2: John Keating (born about 1815 and died March 14, 1863, serving during the Civil War)
•   Ed and Mary McGourren are listed in 1850 US Census, Philadelphia.   Ed is 56, a laborer, born in Ireland, Mary. 47, born in England.  [1850 US Census, Philadelphia, Cedar Ward]
•   John and Mary Keating are listed in 1860 US Census, [1860 US Census, Philadelphia, Phila. Ward 7].  John is 45 and Mary 40.
•   In the 1868 Mary Keating opened a savings account with the Bishops’ Bank (Archiocese of Philadelphia).  The ledger indicates she was 60 years old and born in Cumberland, England.
•   Mary Keating, wid John, lived at 2410 Factory Street, 1870, with Jane and John Emmerson. [1870 US Census, Philadelphia Ward 7, District 17]
•   Mary Keating’s 1880 census record includes the William Davis family (William, Sara and their 4 children).  [1880 US Census, Philadelphia Ward 7, District 17]
•   Mary Keating died September 30, 1880, at 2414 Factory St,  of pneumonia, aged 79.  Interestingly, the certificate states she is married and born in Ireland  [Philadelphia City Death Certificates]

If anyone recognizes these ladies and has additional information to share, I would greatly appreciate it.  Or if additional sources of information can be shared, that would also be great.  If additional facts are needed for the information I have provided, I will gladly provide what I have.

Ancestors in the UK / Frederick Dalton Esq. b. Edinburgh 1815/20?
« Last post by pierre on 15 May, 2013, 12:35 »
Our Dalton family is researching Fredrick Dalton Esq. who flourished in New South Wales (NSW), Australia between about 1850 and 1881. We believe that Frederick was born in Edinburgh Scotland between 1815 and 1820. Frederick had a well documented career as a frontier magistrate in the NSW colonial service between 1860 and 1880, with his work being frequently mentioned in newspapers.

Frederick married Rosa Lavinia Wood; exactly where they were married, where they came from and how they got to NSW is still a mystery to us. Frederick and Rosa had eleven children between 1858 and 1879.

We recently came across a newspaper marriage announcement from 1879; in it both Frederick and his daughter (Sarah Louisa) are called "Tudor" Dalton and reference is made to a grandfather of the bride, the late (in 1879) colonel Tudor Dalton". If Frederick's father was a colonel he would probably have been in the British army. There are a number of Daltons who either were or could have made it to Colonel in that era, but we can find no reference to "Tudor Dalton".

Frederick disappeared while traveling as part of his work in late 1880 and Rosa died in 1901.

I would be happy to hear from anyone who can help with information.

Best regards,
Peter (Pierre) Dalton
